Dr. James P. Bonaparte’s Philosophy

Considered to be an art in itself, the Revision Rhinoplasty melds surgical skill with an artistic mind. No two noses are alike, nor are the same two noses judged equally by all. The communication and planning involved in a Rhinoplasty are crucial in determining what you want to achieve. Dr. James P. Bonaparte believes in communication through words and images to ensure the changes desired are understood by both the patient and the surgeon. Dr. James P. Bonaparte’s main goal is to create subtle changes in order to balance the whole face, similar to the way a skilled painter brings the face to life in a portrait. A well-performed Rhinoplasty will move a person’s viewpoint of your face from the nose back to your eyes, where their focus should be.

Although Rhinoplasty is often performed for cosmetic reasons, it can also be done alongside surgery in order to improve a person’s breathing. Dr. James P. Bonaparte is able to utilize his talent and experience to achieve harmony of both aesthesis and function all in one surgery.

What is the Typical Recovery Period of a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Although everyone is different, a Rhinoplasty results in very little pain. This pain may be present for up to 1 week in most people. Some people may notice nasal congestion for up to two weeks after the surgery. In some cases, bruising may occur around the eyes that can last on average 1 to 2 weeks, although this is variable and does not always occur.

After the surgery, you will have a cast on your nose that stays in place for 7 days. Once the cast is removed your nose will swell and this is a normal occurrence. In some cases, a revision rhinoplasty may result in more swelling.  People are often concerned about the swelling however in the vast majority of cases a large amount of swelling resolves itself over a course of a couple weeks. The more subtle swelling continues to resolve itself for up to 1 year. People should expect to see dramatic improvements by 4 to 6 months and the final result will be achieved about 1 year after surgery.

A very common question patients have is whether nasal splints are used. Nasal splints are used by many traditional Rhinoplasty surgeons. Dr. Bonaparte recently completed one of the largest research studies assessing the use of nasal splints in patients who require a Rhinoplasty and noted that splints achieve nothing other than more pain after the surgery (The Laryngoscope, 2013). As a result of this, Dr. Bonaparte very rarely uses nasal splints. This helps to significantly reduce the pain and discomfort of your procedure without any additional risk to you.

Digital Imaging

Dr. James P. Bonaparte offers computerized digital imaging to all of his Rhinoplasty patients. This involves having professional photographs taken of your face and nose and making adjustments together at a computer workstation. Dr. James P. Bonaparte, also a visual artist, has extensive knowledge of computer software and thus has the ability to use this as a key communication tool. Oftentimes, the changes we desire are difficult to put into words. Dr. James P. Bonaparte’s philosophy regarding digital imaging is that it is a tool for communication. It helps to both individualize the treatment and to achieve a mutual understanding so no concerns are overlooked. Please book a consultation to see if digital imaging is right for you.
