Follow These 5 Skin Care Tips to Help Combat Dry Canadian Winters
Winter is here, and in Canada the dry, cold air can wreak havoc on the skin. Lack of proper skin care in these conditions can lead to dry skin with unpleasant effects like cracking or flaking. If you are dealing with dry skin, read on for some tips on how to combat dry skin during these winter months.
1. Moisturize After Washing
Whenever you wash your body, hands, or face with soap and water you strip the skin of its natural oils. These oils help to lock in moisture, so when they are lost it is important to replace them. Using a moisturizer any time you wash your skin, especially during the winter months, can help to combat dry skin.
2. Apply Sunscreen Daily
While you may be tempted to put away the sunscreen until the warmer months, it is actually important to wear sunscreen during the winter as well. Harmful UV rays can still put stress on your skin’s moisture barrier, which is needed to maintain hydrated and healthy skin. An easy way to remember to wear sunscreen daily is to add it to your daily skincare routine, adding a layer on each morning after you have applied moisturizer.
3. Use Overnight Treatments
Overnight hydrating treatments are a great way to prevent or treat dry skin. Applying an emollient to your skin overnight gives your skin time to absorb the treatment, allowing for the skin to replenish with the moisture and oil it needs.
4. Use a Humidifier
Humidifier add moisture back into dry air, which can be especially helpful when the indoor heating is cranked up during the winter months. Replenishing moisture into the air can prevent and relieve skin dryness.
5. Avoid Over Exfoliation
Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells from the skin, helping it to look healthy and smooth. However, over exfoliating your skin can actually make your skin appear cracked, raw, or irritated. If your skin is looking dry or flaky, gentle chemical exfoliants may be a better option than physical scrubs.
